Volleyball Falls At Francis Marion In Straight Sets

FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion hit .276 and tallied eight service aces on the way to a straight-set (18-25, 17-25, 20-25) victory over the visiting UNC Pembroke volleyball team on Friday evening in the Smith University Center.
 
The setback snapped a two-match winning skein for the Braves (7-13, 0-5 PBC) who will face the Patriots again on Saturday as part of "Black Out" day at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. The victory broke a three-match losing streak for Francis Marion (10-10, 2-4) who registered its fifth-straight series win over UNCP as well.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 18-25 Francis Marion tallied nine of the first 12 points to grab the early momentum and eventually led 17-11 after an attack error by the Braves. UNCP clawed its way back into the set thanks to three-straight points behind the serving of Shannon Skryd, but the Patriots regrouped and closed out the set with an 8-4 run, including five consecutive points.
SET 2 I 17-25 The squads split the first 10 points of the set, but Francis Marion followed with a 7-2 run to take the lead for good. UNCP hit a respectable .235 in the second set, but the Patriots hit better than .425 and committed just two attack errors to climb into the driver's seat in the match.
SET 3 I 20-25 The Patriots took advantage of four early attack errors by the Black & Gold to grab an 8-2 advantage, and eventually built a 17-9 lead following a kill by Alyssa Hansen. The Braves put together and 8-2 run of their own and were within two points, 21-19, late in the set, but FMU grabbed four of the final five points on the night to clinch the match.
