Francis Marion Slips By Volleyball In Five Sets

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke volleyball got a season-high 16 kills from Shannon Skryd and a career-best 58 assists from Bailee Jones but were unable to hold off visiting Francis Marion as the Patriots rallied for a 5-set victory (20-25, 25-17, 19-25, 25-20, 10-15) over the Braves on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
 
The setback marked the second-straight loss for the Braves (7-14, 0-5 PBC) who had entered the weekend with four wins in their last five outings. It was the second series victory in as many days for the Patriots (11-10, 3-4) who recorded a 3-0 win over the Black & Gold on Friday evening in Florence, S.C.
 
Jones's performance allowed the senior to climb over the 2,000 assists mark for her career. She needed just 31 entering the day to reach that plateau.

SET 1 I 20-25 Francis Marion utilized four hitting errors by the Braves to forge an early 5-1 advantage and led 15-9 following a kill from Kayla Arthur. The Black & Gold rallied to pull to within two points, 19-17, after a kill from April Tankersley, but the Patriots outscored the hosts 6-3 down the stretch, including consecutive points to close out the opening set.
SET 2 I 25-17 The Braves hit .237 on the way to snapping a 15-set losing skid in the series (first set victory since Sept. 28, 2016). The Patriots pulled to within a lone point, 11-10, thanks to an attack error by the hosts, but UNCP responded by tacking up six-straight points and not looking back. Francis Marion got as close as three points, 18-15, but the Braves finished off the set-two win with a 7-2 run.
SET 3 I 19-25 The Patriots hit at a near-.400 clip and committed just one attack error on the way to victory in set three. Knotted up at 18 points apiece, Francis Marion used a kill from an Alyssa Hansen and a service ace from Finn Millians to pull away for good. A kill from Brianna Warren made it a 20-19 affair, but the Patriots tacked up the final five points of the set.
SET 4 I 25-20 Francis Marion forged a 17-8 advantage on a UNCP attack error, but the Braves rallied for 11-straight points behind the serving of Abby Farr, forcing two timeouts by the visitors along the way. Francis Marion pulled to within two points, 21-19, thanks to a kill from Courtney Abdur-Rahim, but the tacked up four of the next five points to force a deciding set.
SET 5 I 10-15 The Patriots never trailed in the final set and hit .263 on the way to clinching the match. The Black & Gold made it a one-point set, 10-9, on blocks from Aquia Jones and Ashley Caesar, but Francis Marion scored each of the next four points to pad their advantage. A service ace, coupled with a kill from Kayla Arthur, closed out the scoring on the day.
