Red-Hot Lander Rallies To Top Volleyball In Four Sets

GREENWOOD, S.C. – The visiting UNC Pembroke volleyball team strung together a late push on the way to grabbing the opening set, but the red-hot Bearcats hit at nearly a .400 clip the rest of the way out on the way to a 3-1 victory (23-25, 25-19, 25-11, 25-19) over the Braves on Monday evening in Horne Arena.

It was the third-straight setback for the Black & Gold (7-15, 0-6 PBC) who had dropped 22-straight sets in the series heading into Tuesday's action in Greenwood, S.C. Lander (18-4, 4-2) stayed within a half-game of Peach Belt Conference-leading USC Aiken by grabbing its fifth win in the last six outings, while also staying perfect at home (6-0).

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 25-23 Lander led 7-2 after an attack error by the Braves in the early going, but Kaila Crowder's kill moments later sparked the visitors on a 7-1 run that gave them a 9-8 lead. The Bearcats forged a 17-13 lead on Kaitlyn Krafka's kill, but UNCP steadily chipped away at its deficit and eventually surged ahead, 20-19, on an attack error from the hosts. Knotted up at 23 apiece, the Black & Gold took the lead for good on a kill by Shannon Skyrd, and then put the first set away on an equally-as-impressive kill from Ashley Caesar.
SET 2 I 19-25 The Bearcats strung together six-straight points to grab a 13-7 advantage in the second set, but UNCP answered with a 6-2 win to pull to within two points, 15-13, minutes later. Lander padded its advantage out to 21-17 on a Hannah Hritz kill, and then answered a late rally by the visitors with four-straight points to knot the night back up.
SET 3 I 11-25 Lander hit .481 and committed just one attack error on the way to grabbing set three. A tight set early on, the hosts put together a 7-1 run midway through on the way to a 12-5 advantage, and then captured eight of the last nine points to grab all of the momentum.
SET 4 I 19-25 The hosts used a service ace to grab a 10-4 lead, and then strung together five-straight points moments later to pad their lead out to 15-7. The Braves made a late run and eventually closed the gap to just four points, 21-17, but the Bearcats closed out the night with a 4-2 run to clinch the match.
