Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Miller Climbs Atop Wins List, No. 18 Men’s Basketball Wins Fifth-Straight

PEMBROKE – Senior Nigel Grant scored a game-high 16 points on 7-of-15 shooting and the 18th-ranked UNC Pembroke men's basketball team closed out the game with a 13-3 run to hand Ben Miller his record-breaking 170th victory as head coach with a 70-61 triumph over Young Harris on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

It was the fifth-straight victory for the Braves (19-4, 15-2 PBC) who will get a short rest before taking the court again on Sunday for a 3:30 p.m. matchup with North Georgia. The setback marked the ninth-straight road loss for Young Harris (7-16, 6-11) who has also dropped four-straight games in the series with the Black & Gold.

Miller, who took over as UNCP's head coach prior to the 2008-09 campaign, improved to 170-119 (.588) with the victory to move him past former skipper Lacey Gane atop the program's all-time wins list. Gane compiled a 169-108 (.610) record in Pembroke from 1965-75.

Lumberton native David Strother added 13 points for UNCP, including four-straight free throws in the final 39 seconds, while James Murray-Boyles came off the bench to record his second double-double of the season with 10 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.

Nicksen Blanc also scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Mountain Lions who missed seven of their final nine field goal attempts over the game's last 5-1/2 minutes. J.B. Charles added 10 points for the visitors as well.

Strother's 3-pointer just more than 90 seconds into the second period helped the Braves forge an 8-point advantage, but Young Harris steadily chipped away at its deficit and eventually took a 57-56 lead on a 3-pointer by Charles at the 6:31 mark. Grant's layup on the other end of the court, however, signaled a string of eight-straight points by the Braves that gave them the lead for good.

Neither team was able to find a whole lot of breathing room in the first half. The Braves led for just more than 12 minutes in the opening period, but Young Harris scored six-straight points to take a 30-23 advantage with 4:45 left before the intermission.  UNCP, however, closed the period with 10 unanswered points to lug a 35-25 lead into the locker rooms.

The Braves will welcome North Georgia (10-12, 8-8) to Pembroke on Sunday for a 3:30 p.m. contest at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
UNCP handed the Nighthawks an 80-74 loss earlier this season in Dahlonega, Ga.
