Walk-Off Sac Fly Lifts No. 21 Baseball To Series Win Over Augusta

PEMBROKE – The 21st-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team twice rallied back from late-inning deficits and used a 3-run eighth inning, as well as a sac fly from Kevon Perkins with no outs in the ninth, to post a 9-8 victory over visiting Augusta in the rubber game of the weekend series on Sunday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.

Connor Grainger doubled and homered to highlight a 2-for-3 day at the plate for the Braves (8-1, 2-1 PBC), who also got a homer and a 2-for-3 hitting line from reigning Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Week Trevor Clemons. Roberto Rivera drove in a pair of runs and scored once on a 2-for-3 day for the hosts as well.

Ty Hobbs walked, homered and scored twice on a 2-for-3 plate performance to pace the Jaguars (2-8, 1-5) who struck out nine times in the contest. Six other players turned in hits for the visitors as well.

Trace Hagler (1-0) worked the final three outs in the ninth to pick up his first victory since May 1, 2016. Landen Smith struck out four and allowed just two hits and a pair of earned runs across 4-2/3 innings in his first collegiate start, but was not awarded a decision. Ben Parr (0-1) allowed just one hit and a lone unearned run in 1-1/3 innings of relief work to saddle the tough luck loss for Augusta.

UNCP led 2-0 after four, but Augusta used a pair of two-out RBI singles to knot things up in the top of the fifth. The Black & Gold got a solo homer from Grainger in the bottom of the frame, and increased their advantage out to a pair of runs minutes later on a costly throwing error by the Jaguars, but Augusta plated a trio of unearned runs in the sixth to take its first lead of the day.

After trading runs in each of the next two frames, UNCP went to work in the bottom of the eighth and scored a trio of runs courtesy of a RBI double from Seth Hartings, as well as a two-run single by Rivera, but the Jaguars evened things back up again in the ninth thanks to a 2-run blast from Hobbs.

UNCP would put together one last push in the bottom of the ninth, however, loading the bases with its first three at-bats before Perkins lifted a 1-and-2 offering from Parr deep to centerfield.

UNCP will continue a season-opening 13-game home stand next weekend when they welcome Lander (4-5, 1-2) to Pembroke for a three-game league set at Sammy Cox Field. The squads will open up the weekend with a 6 p.m. game on Friday, and close out the series with single games on Saturday (3 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.).
