Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 23 Men’s Basketball Wins Second-Straight Peach Belt Conference Title

PEMBROKE – Senior Nigel Grant scored a game-high 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting and the No. 23 UNC Pembroke men's basketball team laid claim to the Peach Belt Conference regular season championship for the second-straight year with a 78-67 victory over Flagler on Saturday at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

It was the 22nd victory in the last 24 home games for the Braves (23-5, 19-3 PBC) who finished out the regular season with a 14-1 record in Pembroke, including a 9-1 mark against league competition. The setback officially snapped the lid on the 2017-18 season for the Saints (9-17, 6-16) who fell to 0-9 all-time at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

Grant connected on all five of his field goal attempts in the second half to tack up his seventh 20+-point game of the season, while James Murray-Boyles added 20 points and just missed a double-double with a game-high nine rebounds as well. Brandon Watts chipped in 13 points, six rebounds and four assists to the cause as well.

Damerit Brown tallied 19 points to lead the Saints who shot just 37.5 percent from the field, including a 32.4 percent success rate in the opening half. Cortlin Davis chipped in 11 points for the visitors.

Flagler briefly cut into a 12-point halftime deficit by scoring the first four points of the second period, but Akia Pruitt hit the front end of a two-shot foul at the 14:54 mark to spark a 7-0 run by the Braves that gave them a double-digit lead the rest of the way out. The Black & Gold led by as many as 20 points after a tip-in by Watts with 8:19 left to play, and did not tap the brakes until six minutes later.

The Saints took a short-lived lead after two free throws from Brown 6-1/2 minutes into the opening period, but the Braves answered with a 15-3 run that eventually gave them an 11 point lead with just less than nine minutes left before the intermission. UNCP scored the last five points of the stanza to take a 40-28 lead into the locker rooms.

The second-seeded Braves will return to action again on Wednesday when they host seventh-seeded Georgia Southwestern (13-13) in the quarterfinal round of the PBC Tournament. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
