Miller Ties All-Time Wins Mark As No. 18 Men’s Basketball Runs Past Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Senior Nigel Grant scored 22 of his career-high 31 points in the opening half to help the 18th-ranked UNC Pembroke men's basketball team hand head coach Ben Miller his record-tying 169th win as skipper of the Braves with a 95-81 victory at Augusta on Wednesday evening.

Miller, who is in his 10th season at the helm of the program, tied legendary coach Lacey Gane atop the program's all-time wins list with the result. Gane compiled a 169-107 mark in 10 seasons (1965-75) at the helm of the program as well.

Wednesday's victory was the seventh-straight win in the state of Georgia for the Braves (18-4, 14-2 PBC) who won for just the third time in the last 17 trips to Christenberry Fieldhouse. The setback snapped a five-game win streak for the Jaguars (13-9, 10-6) who have now dropped three-straight games in the series with the Black & Gold.

Grant fueled his career night with 67 percent (12-of-18) shooting from the field, and also pulled down 10 rebounds to notch his 11th career double-double and eighth of the 2017-18 campaign. Freshman Tyrell Kirk chipped in 18 points and a career-best nine assists, while Brandon Watts added 15 points of his own.

Tamyrik Fields put up 25 points on 12-of-16 shooting to lead Augusta who was outscored 40-22 in the paint, despite a 31-29 advantage in the rebounding column. Tyvez Monroe chipped in 21 points for the Jags as well.

Augusta nearly erased a nine-point deficit early in the second half by pulling to within a single possession, 53-51, at the 15:30 mark, but the Braves answered with a 9-2 run to pull out in front for good. UNCP shot 61.3 percent from the field in the latter period, including a 4-of-8 mark from the perimeter, and led by as many as 16 points after a pair of free throws from Watts with 15 ticks left.

Augusta connected on each of its first eight shots of the opening half and led 18-9 after Monroe's 3-pointer at the 14:48 mark. The Braves hung around after that, however, and eventually took their first lead on a 3-pointer by Grant with 5:25 left before the intermission. A five-point scoring spurt in the closing minutes would key a 45-39 advantage for the visitors at the break.

The Braves will resume their 2017-18 regular season schedule on Saturday when they open up a three-game home stand against Young Harris (7-15, 6-10) at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. Tipoff is slated for 3:30 p.m.
