Wrestling Hosts No. 14 Newberry On Friday In Pivotal ECAC Matchup

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke wrestling team will look to continue a recent run of success on Friday evening when the Braves suit up to host 14th-ranked Newberry in a pivotal Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) matchup at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. Wrestling action is set to get underway at 7 p.m. and admission is free.
 
The Braves (10-10, 3-1 ECAC) will enter the night having won four of its last five dual meets, including a pair of victories against ECAC competition. Winners of three of their last four duals, the Wolves (10-5, 3-0) enter the matchup with a ½-match lead on the Black & Gold in the latest conference standings.
 
The Black & Gold is just 3-10 all-time against Newberry, but the squads have split the last four matchups. UNCP rallied back from an early 10-0 deficit to upend the then-No. 16 Wolves last season in Newberry, S.C.
 
The Braves feature four wrestlers with 23 or more victories this season, including 125-pounder Nick Daggett (25-11) who has registered 16 bonus-point wins in 2017-18 as well. Junior Faris Teia (23-8), the starter for UNCP at 184 pounds, has won 17 of his last 18 on the mat, and will ride a 10-match win streak into Tuesday.
 
Friday night's dual will be preceded by Senior Night festivities with lone senior Eric Milks (22-12) set to be honored prior to competition. Milks has recorded more than 80 victories in his four-year career in the Black & Gold, including 54 against NCAA Division II competition.
