No. 18 Baseball Bounces Lincoln Memorial In Extras To Stave Off Elimination

TIGERVILLE, S.C. – Seventh-seeded Lincoln Memorial rallied all the way back from an early 7-0 deficit to tie the score with two outs in the top of the ninth, but the 18th-ranked and fifth-seeded UNC Pembroke baseball team used a RBI single from Trey Jacobs in the bottom of the 11th inning to hold off the Railsplitters, 9-8, on Saturday evening at the NCAA Southeast Regional.

The victory puts the Braves (39-14) into an elimination contest against top-seeded and top-ranked North Greenville (45-9) at Ashmore Park. First pitch of that contest has been slated for noon on Sunday. The setback snapped the lid on the 2018 season for Lincoln Memorial (36-21) who shocked sixth-ranked and second-seeded Georgia College in their postseason opener on Thursday.

Ethan Baucom drove in a pair of runs and scored twice on a perfect 6-for-6 day at the plate to lead the way for the Braves, while Jacobs hit his Peach Belt Conference record-breaking 28th double of the season and drove in three runs on a 3-for-5 hitting line. The redshirt freshman tallied his school record-breaking 79th RBI on the walk-off single in the 11th. That single also marked his school record 95th hit of the season as well.

Trevor Clemons recorded his school record-breaking 44th walk of the season and scored three times on  2-for-5 day at the dish, while Seth Hartings drove in a pair of runs on a 2-for-4 performance.

Chris Salvey hit a 2-run homer and scored twice to key a 2-for-4 day at the plate for the Railsplitters, while Nate Stinson walked and drove in a pair on a 2-for-4 outing.

Reliever Aaron Biggerstaff (5-1) allowed three runs in the ninth to spoil a prime save opportunity for the senior, but answered with scoreless 10th and 11th frames to earn his fifth win of the season. The comeback effort by LMU spoiled a phenomenal start for Landen Smith who struck out four in a season-long seven innings of work before being spelled in the eighth.

Chase Randolph (3-1) struck out four in 2-1/3 innings of relief, but took the loss anyway after surrendering a trio of hits, as well as the game-winning run in extra frames.

The Braves pounded out 11 hits and led 7-0 heading to the fifth, but the Railsplitters scored five times in their next three at-bats and eventually climbed to within a pair of scores, 7-5, on a costly passed ball in the eighth. The Braves stretched their advantage back out to a trio of runs on Baucom's RBI single in the bottom of the frame, but Lincoln Memorial would put together a rally in the ninth to extend its season.

Biggerstaff needed just 10 pitches to retire the first two batters he faced in the ninth, but four-straight Railsplitters reached base after that. LMU eventually knotted the score up at eight runs apiece on Nate Stinson's two-run single.
