PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke soccer team got a first-half goal from
Alexis Pittman, and then poured it on with three more scores in the second half, as the Braves moved to 2-0-0 in Pembroke this season with a 4-0 shutout of visiting Anderson on Saturday afternoon at LREMC Stadium.
Stacey Scott netted a pair of goals to tack up her third career multi-goal game for the Braves (2-1-0) who have now won both series matchups with Anderson, including a 1-0 victory over the Trojans on the road last season. Anderson (0-4-0) remained winless under first-year head coach Sarah Jacobs.
Junior
Gina Ryan stopped all four shots on goal that she faced on the way to recording her 19
th career shutout for the Black & Gold.
Carly Rochelle turned in the only other goal for the hosts, while
Christine Rolfes recorded a trio of assists.
Anderson got its only real chance to get on the board in the first four minutes of play when Megan Foster fired off three shots over a span of 12 seconds – the first finding the hands of
Gina Ryan, while the third was cleared off the line by Scott who was standing tall on the bye line. Pittman gave the Braves the lead for good in the 16
th minute (15:49) when she took a nifty pass from
Bree Mason and fired a shot into the top shelf.
UNCP needed just more than six minutes on the second half clock to make it a two-goal game as Scott found the first of her two goals on the day in the 52
nd minute (51:33). Scott struck again almost 10 minutes later when she redirected a corner kick from Rolfes into the net, while Rochelle capped the scoring on the day with a 66
th minute (65:08) header.
The Braves will be back in action again next Saturday when they trek to Columbus, Ga., to battle fifth-ranked Columbus State (3-0-0, 0-0-0 PBC) in the Peach Belt Conference opener for both sides. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at the Walden Soccer Complex.
The matchup in central Georgia will mark a rematch of the 2017 PBC Tournament championship game. The Braves took that contest, 1-0, via a first half penalty kick to capture their first PBC title in program history.
