Francis Marion Tops Volleyball In Straight Sets

FLORENCE, S.C. – Home-standing Francis Marion posted an improbable comeback victory in the opening set to set the tone, and then held the UNC Pembroke volleyball team to a .108 hitting percentage the rest of the way out to key a 3-0 victory over the Braves on Friday evening inside the Smith University Center.

The setback dropped the Braves (9-13, 0-3 PBC) to 5-8 away from Pembroke this season, including a 2-4 clip in true road matches. It was the second-straight win for the Patriots (10-8, 1-2) who posted their seventh-straight series win over UNCP as well.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 24-26 The Braves trailed 13-9 after Courtney Abdur-Rahim's kill midway through, but UNCP answered with a 7-1 run and eventually took a 16-14 advantage after a service ace from Morgan Gibbs. Brianna Warren's kill gave the Braves a set-point opportunity with a 24-22 lead, but Francis Marion tacked up four-straight points, including two on miscues by the visitors, to complete the comeback.
SET 2 I 19-25 The Patriots hit better than .250 in the second set, and used an early 6-2 run to pull away for good on the way to taking control of the night. The squads split the first dozen points of the set, but the Patriots won six of the next eight points and never looked back. The hosts led by as many as seven points, 21-14, after a service ace, and held off a late rally by the Black & Gold to preserve the 25-19 triumph.
SET 3 I 17-25 Francis Marion opened what would be the final set of the night with an 11-4 run and never looked back on the way to clinching the night. The Braves pulled to within five points, 18-13, following an attack error by the Patriots, but the hosts pushed their lead out to 24-16, before closing out the night on a kill from Adison Minor.
