Key Second Set Leads Volleyball Past Barton

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team fought off six set points by Barton on the way to picking up a marathon win in the second set that fueled the Braves to a straight-sets victory over the Bulldogs in the front half of a day-night doubleheader on Tuesday at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

The victory pushed the Braves (10-13) to the double-digit win mark for the second-straight season, while also moving the Black & Gold to 5-4 in home matchups in 2019. The setback stopped a three-match win streak for the Bulldogs (7-7) who had won nine consecutive sets as well heading into Tuesday.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 25-20 Barton utilized an attack error by the hosts to push its lead out to 15-12 midway through the opening set but the Braves scored seven-straight points and never looked back on the way to grabbing the early advantage. The Bulldogs put together a 4-1 run to pull to within a lone point, 20-19, but the Black & Gold captured five of the final six points to close it out.
SET 2 I 30-28 The Bulldogs strung together an 8-2 run and eventually took a 24-21 lead on block assists from Morgan Shaw and Emily Bott. UNCP, however, would shrug off six set points by the Bulldogs to eventually post a 30-28 win. Barton staved off the first set point by the hosts thanks to a kill from Allison Gambill, but a ball handling error, as well as a kill from Shannon Skryd, would hand the set to the Black & Gold.
SET 3 I 25-17 UNCP came out of the gates on fire in the third set and utilized five early hitting errors by the visitors to eventually build a 10-2 lead. The Bulldogs chipped away at their deficit and eventually used a 4-0 run to pull to within three points, 18-15, but the Braves scored seven of the set's final nine points to clinch the match.
