Volleyball Tops Georgia College For First PBC Win

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Raven Oates registered her first double-double of the season with 13 kills and 20 digs to lead the UNC Pembroke volleyball team to a 3-2 victory over Georgia College on Saturday afternoon inside the Centennial Center.
 
The result gave the Braves (12-14, 1-5 PBC) their first Peach Belt Conference victory of the season, as well as their first conference win since a 3-2 home triumph over Francis Marion on Nov. 11, 2015. The Bobcats (7-14, 1-5), who picked up their first PBC win on Friday evening against Francis Marion, fell to 2-3 at home this season with Saturday's setback.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 12-25 The Bobcats hit .333 and took advantage of 11 attack errors by UNCP to key a 25-12 win in the opening set. Georgia College captured seven of the first eight points and eventually raked in seven-straight points to forge a 21-12 advantage. 
SET 2 I 25-14 UNCP rebounded in a sans-error second set and hit .500 at the net to get on the board with a 25-14 triumph. The visitors captured eight of the first nine points, and then traded points with UNCP for much of the match's next 10 minutes. The Bobcats pulled to within five points, 19-14, on a kill from Emma Boughner, but the Braves closed out the set with six-straight points.
SET 3 I 25-22 Shannon Skryd's kill helped the Black & Gold stake claim to a 12-6 advantage in the third set, but Georgia College came roaring back and eventually knotted the set up at 19 points apiece. UNCP got consecutive kills from Shannon Skryd, April Tankersley and Ashley Caesar to go out in front for good, and then scored the last three points of the set to take control of the day.
SET 4 I 17-25 The Braves controlled much of the first half of the fourth set and took a 12-8 lead following a kill from Elly Hicks, but the Bobcats tacked up 12-straight points to swing all of the momentum over to their side and grab a 20-12 lead. The squads would trade points the rest of the way out, including Libby Bochniak's kill that closed out the win for the hosts.
SET 5 I 16-14 UNCP took advantage of seven attack errors in the match-decided fifth set, but it was a late three-point surge that ultimately clinched the day. The Braves led by as many as four points, 10-6, following an attack error by the hosts, but the Bobcats whittled away at their deficit and eventually put up three consecutive points to take a 14-13 lead. UNCP shook off the set point opportunity thanks to an attack error by Emily Crowell, and then used a solo block from Ashley Caesar to grab a 15-14 lead before block assists from Caesar and Shannon Skryd handed the victory to UNCP.

The Braves will continue a six-match road swing on Tuesday when they make the short trip to Murfreesboro to lock horns with Chowan (4-13) inside the Helms Center. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. UNCP downed the Hawks, 3-1, earlier this season in Pembroke.
