Francis Marion Slips Past Soccer With Late Second Half Goal

FLORENCE, S.C. – Kiley Barr's goal in the 88th minute broke a 1-1 stalemate and carried Francis Marion to a 2-1 victory over the UNC Pembroke soccer team on Wednesday evening at the FMU Soccer Field. 
 
The setback snapped a four game win streak for the Braves (11-4-0, 6-3-0 PBC) who fell to 6-3-0 away from Pembroke this season. The Patriots (7-6-1, 4-5-0 PBC) picked up their first win over the Braves since 2004 and have now won four of their last five contests.



 
SCORING SUMMARY
12' A bicycle kick from Paula Valbuena at midfield led Alexis Pittman past the Patriot defenders, and Pittman sent one past Micahla Kitchen for the first score of the night.
23' Francis Marion knotted the score at one apiece with a goal from Dayle McEwen. Emma Hall was credited with the assist.
88' The Patriots took the lead for good with a goal from Zenia Nava. Kiley Barr picked up the assist.
 
TOP BRAVES
+ Alexis Pittman scored her sixth goal this season. Pittman has now scored at least one point in nine games for the Braves this season.
+ Junior Paula Valbuena was credited with her third assist of the 2019 campaign. She has logged two of her assists against Peach Belt Conference opponents.
 
NOTABLES
+ Francis Marion's victory marked the first for the Patriots in the series since the 2004 campaign. The series stalled from 2005-15 as the Patriots competed as a member of NCAA Division I in women's soccer during that stretch.
+ Wednesday's setback marked just the third road loss of the season for the Braves who also had their two-game road win streak snapped as well.
+ UNCP debuted at No. 3 in the initial NCAA Southeast Region rankings that were released late Wednesday afternoon. Three other Peach Belt Conference squads – No. 1 Flagler, No. 4 North Georgia and No. 10 Columbus State – also appeared in the ranking.

The Braves will be back at home on Saturday against Georgia College (4-8-2, 3-4-1 PBC) for Senior Day. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Lumbee River EMC Stadium. Admission to all UNCP Soccer home games is free.
