Volleyball Shows Grit In Four-Set Loss To Undefeated USC Aiken

PEMBROKE – Freshman Morgan Gibbs notched a double-double with 17 assists and 10 digs to lead an inspired UNC Pembroke volleyball team, but the undefeated and Peach Belt Conference-leading Pacers did just enough the rest of the way out to steal a 3-1 win over the Braves on Friday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

It was the fourth-straight setback for the Braves (8-11, 0-1 PBC) who will wrap up a short two-match home stand on Saturday against Lander. Despite surrendering just their fifth set of the season, the Pacers (14-0, 2-0) opened up a seven-match road trip with its 14th-straight win.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 25-19 The two teams split the first 24 points of the opening set before Selena Biele's kill sparked the hosts on a momentum-changing 5-0 run. The Pacers pulled to within three points, 18-15, thanks to an attack error by the Braves, but UNCP answered with a 5-1 run to pull away for good.
SET 2 I 22-25 The second set featured 12 tie scores and four lead changes. The Braves led 21-19 after an attack error by USC Aiken, but the Pacers closed out the set by winning six of the last seven points.
SET 3 I 21-25 UNCP led 4-1 in the early goings of the third set, but the Pacers eventually knotted the score back up, and then used a small scoring spurt to build a 13-10 advantage. The Braves evened the score up at 16 apiece thanks to a kill from Brianna Warren, but the Pacers rallied for three consecutive points and held their own the rest of the way.
SET 3 I 25-20 USC Aiken hit nearly .400 at the net in the fourth and final set to wrap up competition for the night. The Braves battled back from an early 7-3 deficit to eventually take a 10-8 lead, but the Pacers went ahead for good on Abbey Schad's kill that gave the visitors a 17-16 lead, and then scored the final three points of the set to close it out.
