Lander Battles Back To Top Volleyball In Four Sets

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team posted eight blocks and turned in a trio of service aces, but visiting Lander rebounded from an opening-set loss to register a 3-1 victory over the UNC Pembroke volleyball team on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

It was the fifth-straight loss for the Braves (8-12, 0-2 PBC) who will venture out on the road again next week for a pair of matches, including a Friday evening tilt with Francis Marion. The outcome marked the second-straight triumph for the Bearcats (11-3, 2-1) who improved to 4-1 in true road matches this season.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 25-22 The Bearcats led 18-15 following a kill from Reilly Kunstler, but the Black & Gold came out of their timeout on fire and scored seven of the next 10 points to take a 22-21 advantage and force a timeout by the visitors. The Braves padded their lead out to 24-21 before Lander broke the run, but a kill from Raven Oates finished it out for the hosts.
SET 2 I 9-25 Lander rebounded in a big way in the second set, hitting .481 at the net on the way to a convincing 16-point victory that evened up the match. The Braves possessed an early 4-3 advantage, but the Bearcats reeled off an 8-2 run to take a 12-5 lead, and then put together another 8-2 run to extend the lead out to 20-7.
SET 3 I 22-25 The Bearcats came out on the better end of a 25-22 result in the third set, but the outcome was not decided until late. The Braves rallied back from an early 10-5 deficit and eventually evened the set up at 21 points apiece after an attack error by the visitors, but Lander tallied the set's final three points, including two on attack errors by the Black & Gold, to take control of the match.
SET 3 I 24-26 Lander committed a match-high 10 hitting errors in the third set, but dug its way out of the hole it had gotten itself in to finish out the match. The Braves led 21-14 after an assist from Kaila Crowder, but the Bearcats tacked up six of the next seven points to go out in front, 23-22. The hosts raked in two-straight points, however, to serve for set point with a 24-23 lead, but Lander got consecutive kills from Kyra Ross and Maddie Reed to retake the lead, and then used a block assist to register the match point.
