Volleyball Stops Skid With Win At Catawba

SALISBURY – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team turned in double-digit blocks for the sixth time this season and got big offensive nights from sophomores Ashley Caesar and Brianna Warren on the way to a 3-1 victory over Catawba on Tuesday evening inside Goodman Gym.

The triumph snapped a five-match losing streak for the Braves (9-12) who have now taken two of the last three matchups in the series with the Indians. It was the fourth-straight loss for Catawba (3-8) who fell to 2-3 at home in 2019 as well.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 25-23 The Braves scored the first three points of the night and did not trail at any point in the opening set. UNCP led by as many as five points, 19-14, after an attack error by the hosts, but Catawba used a late scoring spurt to pull to within a lone point, 24-23, thanks to a pair of block assists. A service error by the Indians moments later, however, would close out the set in favor of the Braves.
SET 2 I 25-18 UNCP hit a respectable .218 in the second set, and used a pair of mild runs to take control of the night. The Indians made it a two-point set, 9-7, on a kill from Allie Grubb, but the visitors responded with five-straight points to push their lead out to 14-7. Catawba trimmed its deficit back to four points, 19-15, but the Black & Gold answered with a 4-0 run to pull away for good.
SET 3 I 17-25 Catawba turned the tables on the visitors in the third set, hitting .250 while also taking advantage of eight hitting errors by the Braves to produce a 25-17 win. The squads split the first dozen points of the set, but the Indians used a 10-3 run to take control. UNCP got consecutive points on a kill from Brianna Warren, as well as block assists from April Tankersley and Ashley Caesar, to whittle its deficit back to 21-17, but Catawba tacked up the last four points to close it out.
SET 3 I 25-23 The Braves hit a blistering .351 at the net in what would be the evening's final set, while committing just three hitting errors in the process as well. The visitors used a mild 4-1 run to forge a 15-10 advantage midway through, but the Indians steadily chipped away at their deficit and eventually evened the score up at 20 points apiece. The hosts negated a pair of late deficits, including a kill from Kylie Morgan that tied it up at 23-all, but the Braves took the lead on a kill from Morgan Gibbs, and finished off the night with another kill, this time from Raven Oates.
