Volleyball Falls To Flagler In Regular Season Finale

PEMBROKE – Visiting Flagler hit better than .260 at the net and used late runs in each of the first two sets of the day to fuel a 3-0 victory over the UNC Pembroke volleyball team in the regular season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
 
The setback put the lid on the 2019 regular season for the Braves (15-20, 2-10 PBC) who will now turn their attention to next weekend's Peach Belt Conference Tournament in Aiken, S.C. It was the fourth-straight victory for the Saints (22-7, 9-3) who wrapped up a share of the league's regular season title with the result as well.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 23-25 The Saints used a bad set from the hosts to forge a 9-2 lead, but UNCP steadily chipped away at its deficit and eventually used a run of six-straight points to knot things up at 16 points apiece. Flagler pushed its lead back out to three points, 22-19, minutes later, but the Braves answered with three-straight points to even things up again. Flagler would close it out by tacking up three of the final four points of the set. 
SET 2 I 23-25 The Braves utilized 11 hitting errors by the Saints in the second set to forge a late 20-17 advantage, but the Saints tacked up seven consecutive points to put themselves in a set-point situation with a 24-17 lead. The Braves fought off a trio of set point situations, but the Saints got a kill from Karlie Redfern to hold on.
SET 3 I 17-25 A kill from Shannon Skryd helped the Braves even things up at nine points apiece, but Jordan Taylor's kill moments later sparked the Saints on a key 7-1 run that eventually gave them a 16-10 lead. The Braves kept it at a six point deficit for the next few minutes, but the Saints clinched the team victory by scoring points in pairs down the stretch.

The sixth-seeded Braves will head to Aiken, S.C, on Friday to take on third-seeded Augusta (24-8) in the quarterfinal round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. inside USC Aiken's Convocation Center.
