Francis Marion Holds Off Volleyball

PEMBROKE – Visiting Francis Marion got double-digit kill totals from four different players and used a pair of late-set rallies to overcome 23 hitting errors and best the UNC Pembroke volleyball team, 3-1, on Tuesday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

It was the third-straight loss for the Braves (13-18, 1-8 PBC) who fell to 6-5 on their home court this season as well. The result snapped a two-match skid for the Patriots (16-12, 3-6) who also finished off a season sweep of the Black & Gold as well.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 23-25 The Patriots led by as many as four points, 10-6, after a ball-handling error by the hosts, but UNCP came storming back and eventually used four-straight points to take a 21-20 lead. Francis Marion tacked up four of the next five points, however, to grab a set point opportunity with a 24-22 advantage, and finished it out on Alyssa Hansen's kill.
SET 2 I 19-25 Francis Marion hit better than .400 at the net in the second set and used a 6-2 run midstream to go up by a pair of sets in the matchup. UNCP chopped into an early deficit and pulled to within three points, 11-8, on a kill from Elly Hicks, but the Patriots raked in six of the next eight points to pull away for good. The Braves pulled to within four points, 22-18, on an attack error by the visitors, but the Patriots tallied three of the next four points to win the set.
SET 3 I 25-18 The Braves took advantage of 10 hitting errors by the visitors to get on the board with a big victory in the third set. Francis Marion forged an early 5-3 advantage, but the Black & Gold put together an 11-4 run to take the lead for good. UNCP led by as many as eight points, 21-13, following a Shannon Skryd kill, and scored its last four points via blocks.
SET 4 I 22-25 A back-and-forth affair early on, Francis Marion strung together a 6-2 run to forge a 13-8 advantage, only to have the Braves answer with a 6-1 run that knotted things up at 14 apiece.
