No. 14 Wrestling Routs Belmont Abbey, Fends Off Queens

CHARLOTTE – All-American Nick Daggett (125 pounds), Tyler Makosy (157), Kaleb Warner (165) and newcomer Ryan Monk (285) all turned in perfect days on the mat, and the 14th-ranked UNC Pembroke wrestling team ran its win streak out to four matches with victories at Belmont Abbey and Queens on Saturday.

The Braves tallied wins in each of their first three individual matchups of the day, including a late first-period pin from Daggett at 125 pounds, and cruised to a 33-6 rout of the Crusaders (2-3) in Belmont. Belmont Abbey got on the board with a pin in the 149-pound bout, but the Black & Gold captured each of the last six matchups to fuel the rout. Warner and Garrett Hill (174) both picked up bonus-point victories in the run.

The Royals (0-1) took a short-lived lead thanks to a decision at 141 pounds, but the Braves responded with three-straight bonus point victories to build a 17-6 advantage on the team scoreboard. The Royals won three-straight decisions to cut their deficit back to two points, 17-15, but Monk delivered the team win in the heavyweight matchup with an impressive 10-3 win over John Bennett.

The Braves will be back in action again, Dec. 14-15, when they make the long trek to Indianapolis, Ind., for the 41st Annual Midwest Classic inside UIndy's Nicoson Hall.
