No. 40 Baseball Hits Five Home Runs, Takes Opener At Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The 40th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team pounded out eight extra-base hits, including a quintet of home runs, and tacked up three multi-run innings on the way to a 14-9 victory over Augusta in the series opener on Friday afternoon at Jaguar Field.
 
The Braves (6-1, 1-0 PBC) improved to 14-4 in Peach Belt Conference openers under head coach Paul O'Neil who tacked up his 598th victory as UNCP's head coach as well. It was the fourth-straight loss for the Jaguars (3-5, 0-4), who have also dropped three-straight games in the series with the Black & Gold as well.

KEY INNINGS
TOP 1 Trevor Clemons led off the game with a single and eventually moved himself all the way around to third base before Connor Grainger hit a two-out homer to give the Braves the early edge.
BOT 1 Augusta cut its deficit in half on Beau Hanna's RBI single down the left field line, and then knotted the score back up two batters later on Mason Robertson's one-out sacrifice fly.
TOP 2 The Braves pounded out three hits and took advantage of a trio of errors by the hosts to light up the scoreboard for six runs, highlighted by a 3-run homer from Connor Grainger. The visitors started the scoring parade on a two-run double by Kevon Perkins.
TOP 6 UNCP stretched its advantage out to double digits on Ethan Baucom's 3-run home run with one out, but pushed the advantage out to 14-2 on RBI hits from Connor Grainger (solo home run) and Zach Ghelfi (double).
BOT 8 Augusta sent 12 batters to the plate amid a 6-run eighth inning. Trent Maddox hit a 2-run double, Harrison Moore followed with a 2-run single and Beau Hanna capped the inning with a RBI double in the ensuing at-bat.

The Braves will resume their weekend series at Augusta on Saturday at Jaguar Field. Game two has been moved up to an 11 a.m. first pitch to accommodate rain in the forecast.
