Augusta Uses 23 Hits To Even Series With No. 40 Baseball

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Home-standing Augusta pounded out 23 hits and scored 14 times behind a just-enough performance from three of its pitchers to even up its weekend series with the No. 40 UNC Pembroke baseball team on the shoulders of a 14-9 victory over the Braves on Saturday at Jaguar Field.
 
The setback snapped a two-game win streak for the Braves (6-2, 1-1 PBC) who will look for their third series victory of the season on Sunday at Jaguar Field. It was the first Peach Belt Conference victory of the season for Augusta (4-5, 1-4) who improved to 23-14 all-time against the Braves at home.

KEY INNINGS
TOP 1 The Braves struck first thanks to a costly throwing error by the Jaguars, and then pushed their lead out to 2-0 on a RBI single by Elijah Helton.
BOT 1 The first six hitters in Augusta's order all registered base hits, and the Jaguars eventually scratched the scoreboard for seven runs. The frame was highlighted by a two-run double by Mason Robertson and a two-run homer by Patrick Watson – his first of the day.
TOP 3 Luke Jackson and Ethan Baucom both led off the frame by being hit by pitch, and Connor Grainger (double) and Elijah Helton (two-run double) both followed with run-scoring knocks. Zach Ghelfi capped off the inning with a two-run homer.
BOT 3 The Jaguars retook the lead on Patrick Watson's one-out solo homer.
BOT 4 Augusta extended its lead out to 10-7 with a pair of run-scoring hits with two outs showing. Zach Goble scored Trent Maddox on a double to centerfield, and Mason Roberton followed with a RBI single up the middle.
TOP 6 Trevor Clemons laced a one-out single up the third base line to move Brennen Hogan into scoring position, and Ethan Baucom legged out an infield single to score the run. Baucom and Clemons successfully executed a double steal moments later, but reliever Aron Chick got Connor Grainger on a swinging strike three to nix the threat.
TOP 8 Bobby Dixon drew a hit by pitch to lead off the frame, and pinch runner Kevon Perkins steadily made his way around the base paths before scoring on a two-out double by Ethan Baucom.
BOT 8 Harrison Moore homered to lead off the home half of the eighth, and Brian Smith hit a three-run shot four batters later to cap the scoring on the day for the hosts.

UP NEXT
The Braves will close out their weekend series at Augusta with the series rubber match later today. The series finale was pushed up a day due to expected inclement weather that will move into the area this evening.
