PEMBROKE – Visiting Indiana (Pa.) pounded out 13 hits and scored 11 times behind a solid outing from right-hander Jeff Allen as the Crimson Hawks evened up their weekend series with the No. 40 UNC Pembroke baseball team with an 11-1 victory in the nightcap of a series-opening doubleheader on Saturday at Sammy Cox Field.
The setback snapped a 13-game home win streak for the Braves (4-1) who had not dropped a game in Pembroke since a 12-2 loss to USC Aiken on March 31, 2018. It was the first win of the five-game-old series for the Crimson Hawks (1-1).
Four different players recorded base hits for UNCP, including
Connor Grainger (1-for-3) who provided the only run of the game for the hosts on a RBI double in the first.
Luke Jackson walked and scored to highlight a 1-for-2 hitting line.
Three players turned in multi-hit nights for IUP, including Austin Vigliotti who singled three times and scored a trio of runs on a 3-for-4 plate performance. Chris Eisel homered and drove in four runs on a 3-for-5 outing as well.
Landen Smith (0-1) allowed four earned runs on six hits in just 1-2/3 innings from the hill to saddle the loss for the Black & Gold. Allen (1-0) struck out seven and allowed just three hits in five solid innings of work to grab the win for the visitors, while Mike Klingensmith pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh inning to pick up the save.
The Crimson Hawks scored twice in each of the first two innings to set the tone, but added an insurance run in the fourth before putting the game away with three runs in each of the final two frames.
The Braves will finish out their weekend series with IUP with a Sunday rubber match at Sammy Cox Field. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
