PEMBROKE – The 40
th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team broke a 6-year-old Peach Belt Conference record by drawing 19 walks, as well as took advantage of seven errors by visiting Indiana (Pa.), on the way to a series-clinching 22-3 win over the Crimson Hawks on Sunday at Sammy Cox Field.
The victory successfully capped a season-opening six-game home stand for the Braves (5-1) who tacked up their most runs since a 26-3 home win over Barton on March 28, 2017. IUP (1-2) fell to 1-5 all-time in the series with the Black & Gold.
Senior
Elijah Helton turned in a career-best six RBI to highlight a 2-for-4 day at that plate that included a grand slam in the fifth inning, while all-American
Luke Jackson doubled, drove in a pair of runs and scored three times on a 2-for-4 hitting line. Sophomore
Connor Grainger finished his day with a PBC record six walks, while also adding three RBI and a trio of runs scored to his offensive line as well.
Nick Hess doubled, homered and scored twice on 2-for-3 day to lead the Crimson Hawks.
Newcomer
Tanner Routh (1-0) struck out two and allowed just one hit over two innings of work to pick up the victory in a pre-determined pitching rotation. Senior
Jordan Toney and freshman
Randy Floyd both pitched a scoreless inning of relief, but neither were awarded a decision.
Tyler Adams (0-1) struck out four and allowed just one hit in three innings of work, but took the loss anyway for IUP after tallying five walks and allowing four unearned runs.
The Braves tacked up four runs in the second without recording a hit, taking advantage of three walks and a trio of costly fielding errors to grab an early 4-0 lead. IUP got on the board via a two-out RBI single from Luke Hollander in the fourth, but the Braves answered with five scores in the home half of the frame to signal the rout.
UNCP led 13-1 after 15-1 after plating two in the bottom of the sixth inning, and rallied for seven more runs in the seventh to make it a 22-2 contest.
The Braves will open up a seven-game road trip next weekend when they head to southwest Georgia for a three-game series at PBC rival Augusta (3-4, 0-3 PBC) at Jaguar Field.
