Baseball Continues Surge, Rattles Barton

WILSON – The UNC Pembroke baseball team erupted for 16 hits, including eight of the extra-base variety, and scored 21 times behind a five-arm pitching staff, on the way to a 21-4 victory over Barton on Tuesday afternoon at Nixon Field.
 
The triumph marked the third win in the last four outings for the Braves (11-11) who also snapped a seven-game road losing streak with the result as well. It was the second-straight setback for the Bulldogs (17-10) who were coming off a series victory at fourth-ranked Mount Olive.

KEY INNINGS
TOP 1 Luke Jackson hit a solo homer on Barton starter Donovan Waitman's second offering of the contest to get things going for the Braves who added three more runs in the frame to grab a 4-0 advantage.
TOP 2 UNCP loaded the bases with its first three at-bats of the frame, and followed with three-straight RBI knocks to pad its advantage out to 7-0. Jarratt Mobley's two-out RBI single later in the frame made it an 8-0 advantage headed to the third.
BOT 4 The Bulldogs put their first four batters aboard in the frame, including a RBI single from JoJo Allen, but UNCP starter Davis Hurd quelled the rally by sitting down the next three batters he faced.
TOP 5 Bobby Dixon sparked a six-run inning for the Braves by leading off the frame with a solo homer. The Black & Gold utilized three errors in the frame to plate five more runs, including four of the unearned variety.
BOT 5 Jacob Marcos led off the home half of the fifth with a solo homer, and the Bulldogs exhausted their offense on the day later in the inning when a hit by pitch with the bases loaded forced Colby Warren across the plate.
TOP 6 Ethan Baucom (sac fly) and Connor Grainger (solo homer) both knocked in runs to push the lead out to 14 runs, and Jarratt Mobley gave the Braves a 19-4 run on a two-out RBI single later in the frame.
TOP 8 Bobby Dixon drew a two-out walk, and Zach Ghelfi followed with a single, to set the table for Kevon Perkins who hit his second home run of the season over the wall in left field.
TOP 9 Zach Ghelfi drew a two-out walk with the bases loaded to force Connor Grainger home from third base and cap the scoring on the day for both teams.

UP NEXT
The Braves will continue a five-game road trip this weekend when they head to western South Carolina for a weekend series at Anderson (9-12). The squads will open up the three-game set on Friday at 6 p.m.
