Volleyball Powers Past West Alabama, Runs Win Streak To Five

FLORENCE, S.C. – Sophomore Ashley Caesar turned in a team-high 10 kills and hit .350 at the net, and the UNC Pembroke volleyball team matched its longest win streak since 2013 with a 3-1 victory over West Alabama on Friday evening at the FMU Invitational in Florence, S.C.

The triumph helped the Braves (5-2) extend their winning skein out to five games, the longest run of wins since the 2014 squad also strung together five victories in September. The setback kept West Alabama (0-6) winless through six matches this season, while also marking the Tigers' first series loss to the Black & Gold as well.

Both the 2001 and 2013 clubs registered six-straight wins which are the longest win streaks for the program in 25 seasons.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 26-24 The Braves hit an impressive .346 in the opening set of the day, but needed a late scoring spurt to grab the early advantage in the match. A kill by Ashley Caesar gave the Black & Gold a late 24-22 advantage, but the Tigers capitalized on consecutive hitting errors by the Braves to knot the score up at 24 apiece moments later. Consecutive kills from Raven Oates, however, would close the set out for UNCP.
SET 2 I 25-27 The second set was as back and forth as the final score indicated, as the teams swapped leads six times and saw 15 tie scores. An attack error by West Alabama allowed the Braves to serve for match point with a 24-23 advantage, but the Tigers benefitted from a hitting error, as well as a kill from Leah Koltz, to storm ahead, 25-24. Ashley Caesar's kill moments later evened the score up at 25, but West Alabama retook the lead on a kill seconds later, and then utilized a hitting error by the Black & Gold.
SET 3 I 25-23 The squads split the first 30 points of the third set before UNCP made a late move to go ahead for good in both the set and the match. The Braves led 23-18 after a bad set by the Tigers, but UWA rebounded with four-straight points to pull to within one, 23-22. The Tigers fought off one serve for match point after April Tankersley's kill gave UNCP a 24-22 lead, but another kill by Raven Oates finished off the set.
SET 4 I 25-18 The Braves hit better than .475 on the way to eventually grabbing a 16-6 lead in the fourth set, but West Alabama tacked up the next seven points – including five via kill – to whittle its deficit down to just three points. The Braves led 20-16 following an attack error by the Tigers, but UWA won four-straight points to climb back into the set again. It was all for naught, however, as the Braves posted the final five points – including four via hitting errors – to extend their win streak.
