Mount Olive Slips Past Volleyball In Midweek Action

MOUNT OLIVE – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team hit better than .400 at the net and coasted to a victory in the opening set, but Mount Olive did just enough the rest of the way out to post a 3-1 victory over the Braves on Tuesday evening in Kornegay Arena.

The contest marked the official road opener for the Braves (6-4) who have now dropped consecutive matches for the first time since September 7. The triumph stopped a season-opening three-match skid for the Trojans (1-3) who improved to 4-1 all-time against the Black & Gold in Kornegay Arena.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 25-16 The Braves came out with cannons at full capacity and hit at a .423 rate en route to a convincing 25-16 victory in the opening set. The Braves lead was just two points, 11-9, following an ill-timed ball-handling error, but an attack error by the Trojans on the ensuing point sparked an 8-2 run that eventually gave UNCP a 16-9 advantage. The hosts got to within six points, 19-13, on a kill from Keyonna Grandy, but the Braves captured six of the final nine points of the set to put it away.
SET 2 I 25-27 The Trojans put together a 7-2 run to forge a 24-17 lead in the second set, but were unable to avoid the late-set dramatics. UNCP strung together seven-straight points to knot it up at 24 apiece, but the Trojans righted the ship and eventually knotted the match up at one set apiece. The hosts squandered their eighth set point attempt thanks to a  service error that made it a 25-25 affair, but a kill from Kamber Skeen and an attack error from the Black & Gold proved to be the difference.
SET 3 I 23-25 Both teams hit at a respectable rate in the momentum-swinging third set, but it was the Trojans that ad just enough fuel in the tank to gain the advantage in the match. The Braves led by as many as four points, 10-6, after a kill from Shannon Skryd, but the Trojans chipped away at their deficit and eventually knotted the set up at 22 points apiece thanks to a kill from Ania Keene. Elly Hicks's kill moments later handed the lead back to the Braves, but Mount Olive tacked up three-straight points to steal one away.
SET 3 I 21-25 The Braves trailed 17-14 after an attack error, but rallied for six-straight points behind the serving of Raven Oates to eventually forge a 20-17 lead. Mount Olive would right their ship again, however, and closed out the night with an 8-1 run to post a 25-21 victory in the match-clinching set.
