Two Late Goals Lift Soccer Over Chowan

MURFREESBORO – The UNC Pembroke soccer team scored goals less than two minutes apart late in the second half to break a scoreless deadlock and propel the Braves to a 2-1 victory over Chowan on Wednesday evening at Hawks Field.
 
It was the third road victory of the season for the Black & Gold (4-1-0) who turned in a 14-5 advantage in the shot column against the Hawks (0-3-0) while also posting a 13-2 disparity on corner kicks. The Braves have now won seven of the last eight meetings with Chowan.


 
SCORING SUMMARY
73' Freshman Naomi Fountain netted her first collegiate goal with an assist from Alexis Pittman
75' Senior Katy Ryan took advantage of a penalty kick for her first goal of the season that gave the Braves a 2-0 lead.
80' The roles were reversed on penalty kicks as Chowan's Sierra Gonzalez cashed in on the free opportunity to trim the hosts' deficit in half.
 
TOP BRAVES
+ Naomi Fountain scored the first points of her collegiate career with the first goal of the night.
+ Katy Ryan netted the third goal of her career, and her first since netting one at Queens last season.
+ Maya Grimes came off the bench to tally a team-best four shots for the Black & Gold, including two strikes that were on target.
 
NOTABLES
+ The Braves outshot the Hawks 14-5, including a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal.
+ UNC Pembroke saw 13 chances from corner kicks compared to two chances by the hosts.  
+ This is the second consecutive game that a freshman has scored the first goal for the Black & Gold.
+ UNCP has not lost to Chowan since the first meeting in 2002 when the Hawks took a 3-1 decision in Murfreesboro.
 
 
UP NEXT
The Braves will have a week off before returning home to open Peach Belt Conference play against No. 13 Columbus State (3-0-1, 0-0-0 PBC) on September 28. Game time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Lumbee River EMC Stadium. Admission is free to all home soccer games.
