Volleyball Snaps Skid, Tops Erskine

AIKEN, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team benefited from 24 hitting errors by Erskine, totaled 10 service aces and got six or more kills from four different players on the way to a sweep of region rival Erskine on Saturday in the final game of the USC Aiken Invitational.

The triumph snapped a three-match skid for the Braves (8-7) who stopped a four-match series losing streak in the process as well. It was the third loss in the last four outings for the Flying Fleet (5-8) who were coming off a five-set victory over Francis Marion on Friday evening. It was UNCP's first win over Erskine since the 2010 season.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 25-22 The squads split the first six points of the opening set, but Neither team was able to find much cushion in the opening set. Erskine gave the first set its 13th tie score when Madison Plyn's kill evened things up at 21 apiece, but three-straight attack errors by the Flying Fleet swung all of the momentum over to the Braves. Erskine fought off the first set point with Reilly Bartlett's kill, but an Ashley Caesar kill moments later closed things out for the Black & Gold.
SET 2 I 25-20 UNCP hit at a .333 rate in the second set, but had to fight off a late rally by Erskine to take full control of the match. UNCP led 20-16 following an attack error by the designated visitors, but the Flying Fleet stormed back and used a 4-1 run to pull to within a point, 21-20, a few minutes later. The Braves, however, would score the final four points of the set, including three via kill.
SET 3 I 25-22 Erskine battled back from a 14-9 deficit to knot the third set up at 17 points apiece, but a pair of service aces from the hands of freshman Morgan Gibbs inevitably proved to be the difference. Selena Biele's kill gave the Braves a 24-22 lead, and Casey O'Quinn's service ace clinched the match for UNCP.
