Volleyball Drops Five-Set Heartbreaker To Grand Valley State

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team cashed in on 22 hitting errors by Grand Valley State in the first three sets to forge a 2-1 advantage, but the Lakers hit .400 or better in the final two sets to post a 3-2 victory over the Braves on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

The contest was the second match of the 2019 UNC Pembroke Invitational which had its slate altered due to the inclement weather brought by Hurricane Dorian earlier this week. The Black & Gold (0-2) closed out day one at the tournament with their second five-set loss. It was the first win of the season for the Lakers who dropped a pair of matchups on Friday at the Queens Fall Classic.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 22-25 The Braves tacked up 11 of the set's first 14 points, but Grand Valley State came storming back before eventually grabbing the opening set. The Lakers scored 10 of the final 13 points of the set to grab the set victory, and keyed the late run by taking advantage of six unforced errors by the Black & Gold.
SET 2 I 25-22 The Lakers rebounded from an early 6-3 deficit and eventually grabbed a 15-14 lead on blocks from Kaily Grulke and Emma Clines, but UNCP answered with a clutch 8-2 run to even things back up in the match. Grand Valley State trailed 22-17 after a kill from Raven Oates, but the Lakers climbed to within striking distance, 24-22, thanks to an attack error by the hosts, as well as a service ace. Another kill from Oats was enough to ice the set for the hosts, however.
SET 3 I 25-22 Grand Valley State led 12-10 following a kill from Alexandra Thompson midway through the set, but the Braves answered by taking six of the next nine points to forge a 16-15 lead minutes later. A 6-1 run by the hosts would eventually produce a 22-17 advantage for the Black & Gold and, to spite two-straight points by the Lakers that cut their deficit back to 24-22, a kill by Raven Oates handed the Braves a 2-1 set advantage.
SET 4 I 12-25 The Lakers evened things back up on the day by rolling through the fourth set, hitting .407 and committing just four errors. Tied at eight apiece following a service error by the visitors, Grand Valley State captured seven of the next eight points to take a lead it would not relinquish.
SET 5 I 8-15 The Lakers outhit the Braves .563-(-.045) in the decisive fifth set to put the match on ice. The squads split the first eight points of the set before Grand Valley State won seven-straight points to fuel the outcome.
