Volleyball Cruises Past Fayetteville State

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team hit better than .271 at the net, logged eight blocks and took advantage of   26 hitting errors by visiting Fayetteville State to cruise to its first victory of the season with a 3-0 blanking of the Broncos on Sunday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
 
The contest was the fifth match of the 2019 UNC Pembroke Invitational which had its slate altered due to the inclement weather brought by Hurricane Dorian earlier this week. The result helped the Black & Gold (1-2) notch its first win of the 2019 campaign, while the Broncos (0-2) stayed winless through two matches on opening weekend.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 25-15 The Braves hit at a match-best .346 clip, but it was Fayetteville State that forged a 12-10 advantage after a costly service error by the hosts. UNCP would respond by capturing nine of the next 10 points, however, and then scored the final six points of the opening set to go on top early.
SET 2 I 25-17 UNCP was tagged with eight hitting errors in the second set and trailed 14-9 midway through, but the Black & Gold responded again, this time by notching 12 of the next 13 points. That stretch included a run of nine-straight points that eventually gave the Braves a 21-15 lead. The hosts closed out the set-two victory by claiming four of the last five points as well.
SET 3 I 25-11 A shuffle to the lineup did not do much to cure the ills of the Broncos who committed a match-high 10 kills in the third set while hitting at a paltry -.094 rate. The Braves notched seven of the first eight points in the final set, and then won the final eight points to secure the sweep.
