Volleyball Blanks UVa.-Wise To Wrap Up Perfect Sunday

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team hit nearly .250 at the net and matched a season-high with 10 blocks as the Braves wrapped up a perfect Sunday on the court with a convincing 3-0 victory over UVa.-Wise on Sunday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
 
The contest marked the final match of the 2019 UNC Pembroke Invitational which had its slate altered due to the inclement weather brought by Hurricane Dorian earlier this week. Coupled with an early afternoon decision over Fayetteville State, the win over the Cavaliers (1-1) helped wrap up a perfect Sunday on the court for the Black & Gold (2-2).

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 25-15 The Braves came out of the gates on fire, hitting at a near-.400 clip on the way to a double-digit victory in the first set. UNCP grabbed the first four points of the match, and used a 7-0 run moments later to pad its advantage out to 16-6. The hosts led 23-12 following an attack error by the Cavaliers, and closed out the set thanks to a kill from Raven Oates, as well as a hitting error by the visitors.
SET 2 I 25-18 UVa.-Wise rebounded to start the second set and notched five of the first six points to serve notice, but the Braves eventually put together a 7-1 run to take a 10-8 lead and never trailed after that. Kelsey Green's kill helped even the set up at a dozen points apiece, but UNCP notched eight of the next 10 points to grab all of the momentum. Consecutive kills from Morgan Gibbs and Matelyn Gibson set the Braves up with a match point, but it was a service error that finished out the set.
SET 3 I 25-12 UVa.-Wise went out fighting and actually led 12-7 after a costly attack error by the Braves, but UNCP slowly whittled away at its deficit and used a handful of mild runs to get close before knotting the score up at 20 apiece thanks to a kill from Selena Biele. The Cavaliers inched back out in front courtesy of Ciara Kain's kill, but the Braves responded by scoring the next four points before claiming match point on an ill-timed hitting error by the visitors.

The Braves will close out a season-opening six-match home stand with a pair of matches on Tuesday. UNCP will take on Elizabeth City State (0-0) in a 4 p.m. tilt at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court, before tangling with Chowan (0-0) in a 6 p.m. contest.
