Volleyball Falls Just Short In Season Opener With Coker

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team hit a blistering .412 at the net on the way to rolling through the opening set, but visiting Coker righted their ship the rest of the way out, including a 15-9 triumph in the decisive fifth set, to register a 3-2 win over the Braves on Saturday at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

The contest marked the opening match of the 2019 UNC Pembroke Invitational which had its slate altered due to the inclement weather brought by Hurricane Dorian earlier this week. The Black & Gold (0-1) was looking for its first win in a season opener since the 2012 campaign. The Cobras (1-0) have now won five-straight matchups in the series with UNCP, including two-straight five set thrillers.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 25-16 The Braves surrendered the opening point of the day, but responded with seven-straight points after that to grab the lead for good in the opening set. UNCP led by as many as 10 points, 23-13, following a ball handling error, before the Cobras tacked up three-straight points to climb back in it. Kills from Elly Hicks and Ashley Caesar were enough for the hosts to close it out, however.
SET 2 I 25-27 UNCP took a 15-14 advantage on a kill from Kaila Crowder, but the Cobras strung together four-straight points to go out in front, 18-15. The Braves battled back from a 21-19 deficit and eventually took a 24-23 lead on a kill by Caesar, but the visitors took advantage of consecutive unforced errors by the hosts to walk away with the set.
SET 3 I 22-25 The Braves led by as many as four points, 13-9, following a ball handling error by the Cobras, but Coker chipped away at its deficit and eventually strung together a 6-1 run to stake claim to a 20-18 advantage. The hosts knotted the score back up at 21 apiece thanks to a kill from Shannon Skryd, but the Cobras won four of the last five points to take a 2-1 set advantage.
SET 4 I 25-19 UNCP tacked up a 7-1 run early and held the Cobras to just a .073 hitting percentage to force a fifth and final set. The Black & Gold grabbed a 13-5 lead following a kill from Anna Heinz, and led 18-11 after an attack error by the visitors. Coker strung together five-straight points to whittle its deficit back to 18-16, but the Braves scored the next four points to stuff the comeback attempt.
SET 5 I 9-15 The Cobras hit .400 in the fifth set, and claimed eight of the first 11 points to take the match. The Braves trailed by seven points, 13-6, following a kill from Olivia Cerick, but claimed three-straight points after that to put the fans back in their seats. A kill from Cerick, as well as an unforced error from the Braves, marked the final points of the day.
