GUNNISON, Colo. – The UNC Pembroke wrestling team picked up a trio of individual victories, including a bonus-point win by
Marcus Bell at 197 pounds, but 23
rd-ranked Western Colorado captured the remainder of the individual matchups on the way to a 27-10 victory over the Braves on Friday in Paul Wright Gym.
The setback marked the second and final leg of a run through the Midwest for the Braves (6-7) who will remain in Gunnison on Saturday to take part in the WCU-hosted Tracy Borah Duals. It was the second win in the last three outings for the Mountaineers (3-3) who have a pair of top 25 wins to their credit this season as well.
Third-ranked Patrick Allis gave the hosts a quick lead with a third-period (5:43) pin in the 125-pound matchup, but the hosts stretched the team lead out to 12-0 with wins in the 133- and 141-pound weight classes as well.
Tyler Makosy got the Black & Gold on the board with a convincing 9-2 decision at 149 pounds, but the Mountaineers captured three of the next four bouts to clinch the team outcome.
Bell tacked up his fourth bonus-point win of the season with a dominating 11-3 major decision at 197 pounds to put the last points on the board for the Braves.
UNCP will open up its portion of competition at the Tracy Borah Duals on Saturday with an 11 a.m. ET matchup against New Mexico Highlands (0-0). The Black & Gold is also slated to wrestle No. 22 Colorado Mesa (2-0) and CSU Pueblo (0-0) on Saturday as well.
