PEMBROKE – The 21
st-ranked UNC Pembroke wrestling team tacked up a dozen takedowns, four near falls and a pair of forfeits on the way to eight individual victories on the night as the Braves stayed unbeaten with a 38-9 victory over Queens on Tuesday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
The result marked the 10
th-straight win for the Braves (5-0) dating back to last season, and also gave UNCP its most wins to start a season since the 2010-11 campaign. It was the third-straight loss for the Royals (1-3) who fell to 0-4 all-time in the series with their North Carolina rivals.
Anthony Carter needed just 28 seconds to give the hosts an early lead, registering a takedown just 26 seconds into his 125-pound matchup with Alessandro Araujo, and then pinning shoulders to the mat two ticks later. Noah Gilbert knotted the team score back up with a third-period pin a handful of minutes later, but the Braves would cruise after that.
Chaise Mayer picked up a win by injury default at 141 pounds to signal the start of four consecutive wins that eventually gave the Braves a 24-6 lead on the team scoreboard. Noah Curreri toughed out a 5-4 decision at 174 pounds to plug the dam for the Royals, but the Braves finished out the night with three more victories, including bonus-point wins by
Marcus Bell (197 pounds) and
Ryan Monk (285).
UNCP will be back in action again on February 6 when the Braves make the long trek to West Liberty, W.Va., to defend its title at the Mountain East Conference Championships. Wrestling action is slated to get underway at 9 a.m. inside West Liberty University's ASRC Complex.
