Volleyball Falls Just Short At Francis Marion

FLORENCE, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team offset a tight loss in the night's opening set with a pair of dominant wins in the second and third stanzas, but Conference Carolinas-leading Francis Marion did just enough down the stretch to eek out a 3-2 (26-28, 25-14, 25-15, 22-25, 10-15) victory over the Braves on Wednesday evening inside the Smith University Center.

The setback snapped a three-match league win streak for the Braves (16-8, 8-2 CC) who dipped 1-1/2 games behind the Patriots for supremacy in the conference standings. It was the ninth-straight win for Francis Marion (13-8, 9-0) who has not tasted defeat since a 3-0 neutral site loss to Gannon on September 18.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 26-28 The opening set saw 13 tie scores and eight lead changes, but it was the hosts who eventually struck first on the evening. The Braves fought off a pair of set-point opportunities to eventually create one of their own after a kill from Brianna Warren gave the Black & Gold a 25-24 edge, but the Patriots inevitably tacked up two-straight points, including a set-deciding kill from Lexi Albright.
SET 2 I 25-14 Francis Marion was held to a paltry .057 hitting percentage in the third set as UNCP took control of the evening. The squads split the first 14 points of the third stanza, but UNCP scored five-straight points after that to take the lead for good. A run of six-straight points minutes later fueled the final 10-point margin.
SET 3 I 25-15 Francis Marion was held to a paltry .057 hitting percentage in the third set as UNCP took control of the evening. The squads split the first 14 points of the third stanza, but UNCP scored five-straight points after that to take the lead for good. A run of six-straight points minutes later fueled the final 10-point margin.
SET 4 I 22-25 The Patriots totaled six blocks and a trio of service aces to even the night back up with a clutch win in the fourth set. UNCP forged a 17-15 lead thanks to a service error by the hosts, but Francis Marion responded with seven consecutive points to swing the momentum. The visitors countered by putting up five of the next six points to cut their deficit back to 23-22, but the Patriots used a ball-handling error by the Black & Gold, as well as an ensuing kill by Lily Walton, to close it out.
SET 5 I 10-15 The Patriots amassed 10 kills in the fifth and deciding set to put the finishing touches on the match. UNCP collected consecutive points to pull to within one point (11-10) late, but Francis Marion got its second win and tallied the last four points of the night, including three via kill, to collect the home win.
