Volleyball Makes Quick Work Of Visiting Converse

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team registered its best hitting percentage in nearly seven seasons and needed just 64 minutes to post a sweep (25-19, 25-14, 25-13) of visiting Converse on Friday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

It was the 15th win in the last 18 outings for the Braves (17-8, 9-2 CC) who snapped a two-match skid with the triumph as well. It was the fourth-straight loss for the Valkyries (3-15, 3-6) who fell to 1-14 away from home with Friday's result.

The Black & Gold hit .411 on the night against their South Carolina visitors – the best offensive performance for the squad since a .439 hitting performance against Virginia Union on Oct. 22, 2014. UNCP committed a season-low eight attack errors on the night as well, the best showing in that category since logging just seven at Young Harris in April.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 25-19 Converse actually forged a two-point advantage on a pair of occasions in the opening set, but UNCP rallied late to turn back an upset bid. The Valkyries scored two-straight points to even up the set at 19 points apiece, but the Braves tacked up the last six points of the stanza, including four via kill, to take the early lead on the night.
SET 2 I 25-14 The Braves hit better than .400 in the second set to completely swing the momentum. Converse attempted to keep pace and was actually within three points, 9-6, following a ball-handling error by the hosts, but UNCP responded by capturing nine of the next 12 points to distance itself for good.
SET 3 I 25-13 The Black & Gold committed just two attack errors in what would turn out to be the final set of the night to wrap it in Black & Gold. UNCP registered a sizzling .467 hitting percentage at the net, and used three-straight points to push its lead out to double-digits quickly. The Valkyries flirted with a late run, but a kill from Shannon Skryd set up a set-point opportunity, and Katie Pressley delivered the goods with a service ace moments later.

UP NEXT
The Braves will get a week off from competition before resuming their 2021 schedule on October 22 at Barton (6-8, 3-6 PBC). First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside Wilson Gymnasium.
