Volleyball Fends Off Mount Olive In Five Sets

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team offset 33 attack errors with 10 service aces and eight blocks, and used a dominant performance in the fifth set to ward off an upset bid by visiting Mount Olive with a 3-2 (26-24, 21-25, 25-16, 16-25, 15-5) on Saturday afternoon in Pembroke.

It was the third-straight victory for the Braves (19-8, 11-2 CC) who improved to 9-1 this season on Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court – the most home wins for the program since the 2014 season. The result quelled a two-match win streak for the Trojans (9-13, 4-8) who have now dropped three-straight outings in the series with the Black & Gold.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 26-24 The Braves hit .242 at the net in the opening set, but had to fight off a late rally by the Trojans in order to gain the early advantage. SET 2 I 21-25 Mount Olive offset an early 5-4 deficit with a 7-2 run that helped it even up the afternoon. The Braves pulled to within a lone point, 22-21, late, but the Trojans slammed the door on the rally by raking in the final three points of the set.
SET 3 I 25-16 UNCP turned in 16 kills to retake the lead in the match with a victory in the third set. Mount Olive used three-straight points to grab an 8-7 advantage, but UNCP collected 12 of the next 14 points to recapture the momentum.
SET 4 I 25-16 The Trojans turned the table and sent the match into a fifth and deciding set with a big triumph in set No 4. The Trojans hit .275 and totaled 13 kills in the fourth set, and broke a 16-all deadlock with nine-straight points.
SET 5 I 25-16 UNCP regained its composure and hit an afternoon-best .389 with just one attack error in a dominant fifth-set rout. The Braves used four kills, two blocks and a service ace to eventually forge a 9-2 lead in the stanza, and then tacked up five of the final six points for good measure.
