Senior Salute! Volleyball Battles Back To Top King

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team found its momentum with a late rally that fell just short in the opening set, but the Braves hit .241 at the net the rest of the way out to cruise to a 3-1 (23-25, 25-12, 25-16, 25-17) victory over visiting King on Friday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

It was the third-straight home victory for the Braves (21-9, 13-2 CC) who have now posted their most wins at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court since the 2013 campaign. The setback marked the second-straight loss for the Tornado (15-12, 10-6) who fell to 5-5 away from Bristol, Tenn., this season as well.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 23-25 King hit .316 and committed just three attack errors in the opening set, but had to hold off a late rally by the Black & Gold in order to secure the opening-set triumph. UNCP used six-straight points to rally all the way back from a late 23-17 deficit, but the Tornado regained its footing and posted consecutive points, including a block by Brittney Ramsey that closed it out.
SET 2 I 25-12 The net was not as friendly to the Tornado in the second set, as the Braves used five blocks and a trio of service aces to even up the night. The visitors tacked up three-straight points to forge an early 3-2 advantage, but it was all UNCP after that. The Black & Gold strung together four-straight points to take a lead it would not relinquish, and then hung up six-straight points late in the set to pull away for good.
SET 3 I 25-16 The Braves mustered just a .130 clip at the net in the third set, but a hot start was enough for them to swing the momentum completely over to their side. The hosts built a 14-4 lead thanks to a handful of unforced error by the Tornado, and then captured seven of the set's final 10 points to pocket the set.
SET 4 I 25-17 UNCP saved its best performance for the final set of the evening, hitting .378 and racking up 18 kills to put an emphatic cap on the night. King grabbed an early 5-2 advantage, but the Braves counted with five-straight points to climb back in it. The night would eventually be wrapped in Black & Gold, however, as the hosts closed out the set – and broke a 15-15 tie – with a 10-2 run.
