No. 18 Wrestling Pushes Past Bluefield State

| By:
BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – The 18th-ranked UNC Pembroke wrestling team logged 16 takedowns and a trio of nearfalls to put points on the board, but ultimately utilized six bonus-point victories, including three forfeits, to ease past Bluefield State, 34-15, on Saturday inside BSC's Ned Shott Gymnasium.

The triumph snapped a three-match skid for the Braves (1-3) who will now trek to Indianapolis, Ind., next weekend for the 42nd Annual Midwest Classic on the University of Indianapolis campus. It was the first home dual meet of the season for the Big Blues (2-7) who are coaches by former UNCP all-American Blaze Shade.

The Braves forged ahead early, utilizing a forfeit at 125 pounds and Anthony Carter's second-period pin in the 133-pound bout, to build a 12-0 advantage on the team scoreboard. The Big Blues would rally to knot the match back up, however, posting decisions at 141 and 149 pounds, before Jaden Berner's pin with three seconds left in the first period evened up the afternoon.

The Black & Gold took the lead thanks to a forfeit win at 165 pounds and cruised after that. Bluefield State picked up its final points of the day on the shoulders of Justin Fritz's decision at 174 pounds, but the Braves were awarded another forfeit victory at 184 pounds before Bryce Walker (197 pounds) and Zach Shaffer (285) closed out the match with wins via technical fall.
