Wrestling Wraps Up Competition At 42nd Annual Midwest Classic

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Second-ranked Nick Daggett had his Sunday cut short with an injury, but still managed to register an eighth-place finish and lead the 18th-ranked UNC Pembroke wrestling team to a share of 29th place at the 42nd Annual Midwest Classic on the campus of the University of Indianapolis.
 
Daggett used a medical forfeit to capture his 125-pound consolation bracket opener over Davenport's Manuel Leija, but dropped a 9-7 decision to seventh-ranked Isaiah DeLaCerda of Adams State in the consolation quarterfinals. Eleventh-ranked Matt Siszka captured the seventh-place matchup with Daggett via medical forfeit.
 
Heavyweight Zach Shaffer was the only other UNCP wrestler in action on Sunday. He fell to Lindenwood's Michael Kramer in his consolation opener via a first-period pin.
 
The Braves finished the prestigious tournament with 21 team points and shared 29th place with Lake Erie. Sixteen of the nation's top-25 teams competed at the two-day event.
 
UNCP (1-3) will return to action on January 3 when it treks to central South Carolina for a Conference Carolinas dual meet with Newberry (1-2). Mat time is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
