No. 14 Baseball Rallies, Then Powers Past USC Aiken

AIKEN, S.C. – Senior Ethan Baucom hit a game-tying home run in the top of the ninth inning to send the game into extra frames, and Garrett Littleton delivered a 2-run single with two outs in the 12th to push the 14th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team past USC Aiken, 7-5, on Saturday evening at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.

The result marked the 14th-straight win dating back to last season for the Braves (3-0, 1-0 PBC) who improved to 16-5 in Peach Belt Conference openers under skipper Paul O'Neil. It was the sixth-straight series loss for the Pacers (0-4, 0-4) who stayed winless on the still-young campaign as well.

Baucom put himself in elite company with his long ball in the ninth. It was the 50th career home run for the Rockingham native who became UNCP's all-time home run leader last season. Baucom is now one of just four Peach Belt Conference players in the history of the league to belt 50 or more dingers.

KEY INNINGS
BOT 2 Morgan Hyde climbed aboard via a one-out double, and the Pacers grabbed the lead with the next at-bat when a hard hit grounder from the bat of Nick Tripp was misplayed by the UNCP infield. USC Aiken grabbed a 2-0 lead moments later on a RBI single from Tucker Rabun.

TOP 8 Christian Jayne drew a one-out walk to load the bases for the visitors, and the Braves cut into their deficit when Gage Hammonds was plunked by an Austin Hohm pitch that forced in the run.
TOP 9 Wellington Guzman drew a walk to lead off the ninth, and Ethan Baucom knotted the game up two at-bats later with deep drive over the fence in left field.
TOP 12 UNCP loaded the bases after a costly two-out throwing error by shortstop Scott Huntley, and Garrett Littleton hit a seeing-eye single through the left side of the infield to bring Christian Jayne and River Ryan racing home.
EXTRA Reliever River Ryan struck out four batters in the bottom of the 10th, and retired the side in order in the 11th. The Pacers loaded the bases with two outs in the 12th, but Ryan cashed in on his seventh strikeout to close out the victory.
