USC Aiken Sweeps Sunday Twinbill With No. 14 Baseball

AIKEN, S.C. – Home-standing USC Aiken used a one-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to post a 4-3 win in the opening game of a Sunday doubleheader with the No. 14 UNC Pembroke baseball team, and then erupted for 12 runs on 13 hits in the nightcap to finish off a series-clinching doubleheader sweep of the Braves on Sunday afternoon at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.
 
The game one setback snapped a 14-game win streak for the Black & Gold (3-2, 1-2 PBC), while also helping the Pacers (2-4, 2-4) snap a six-game series losing skid. The game two win gave USC Aiken its first weekend series win over the Braves since the 2016 campaign.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 4 USC Aiken loaded the bases with its first four at-bats of the frame, and then took its second lead of the contest when Marcus Mastellone drew a six-pitch walk to force in a run. Jeff Cyr's two-out single two batters later put the hosts on top, 4-2.
TOP 5 The Braves loaded the bases with their first three at-bats, and cut their deficit in half when Christian Jayne drew a six-pitch walk to bring a run home. The visitors knotted the score back up later in the frame on a fielder's choice RBI knock from Spencer Faulkner.  
BOT 9 Tai Gilbert legged out an infield single to start the frame, and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Morgan Hyde. Tyler Littlefield was intentionally walked moments later, and a passed ball put both runners into position. Pinch hitter Jose Hernandez's first-pitch single to the gap in left field finished off the damage.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
BOT 2 Tyler Littlefield (walk) and Kaden Blankenship reached on consecutive at-bats with one out, and Kaden Blankenship drove in the first run of the game on a double down the left field line. Joseph Mozingo (ground out) and James Eckert (single) followed with RBI knocks as well to push the lead out to 3-0.
BOT 3 The Pacers blew the game wide open by sending 13 batters to the plate in a 6-hit, 8-run frame. Five different players recorded RBI at-bats in the inning, but the Pacers also scored runs on an error and a wild pitch as well.

UP NEXT
The Braves will be back in action again on Friday and Saturday when they travel to Orangeburg, S.C., for a Peach Belt Conference weekend series with Claflin (1-5, 1-5 PBC). The squads will open up the weekend with a 6 p.m. contest on Friday evening at Historic Mirmow Field.
