Volleyball Falls In Four Sets To USC Aiken

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team hit better than .303 at the net and registered 13 kills on the way to grabbing a big win in the opening set, but visiting USC Aiken captured each of the next three sets on the way to a 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 20-25, 13-25) win over the Braves on Friday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

It was the second match across a five-day span for the Braves (1-1, 1-1 PBC) who will get a short rest before returning to the court on Saturday afternoon to take on Augusta. The Pacers (2-1, 2-1) have now won 20-straight contests in the series with the Black & Gold.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 25-21 The Pacers scored four-straight points to grab a late 21-19 advantage, but UNCP responded with six consecutive points of their own to steal a victory in the opening set. The Black & Gold posted four total blocks in the set, including back-to-back stuffs that closed out the set-ending 6-0 run.
SET 2 I 21-25 USC Aiken was tagged with 10 errors in the second set, but used a late 5-0 run to fuel a 25-21 triumph. Block assists from Brianna Warren and Elly Hicks knotted the score up at 18 apiece, but Alie Smith's kill seconds later signaled a run of five consecutive points for the Pacers, including two via service ace.
SET 3 I 20-25 The story was much of the same in the third set as the Pacers overcame eight hitting errors to grab a momentum-swinging 25-20 win. The Braves led 9-8 following a kill by Kaila Crowder, but the visitors captured eight of the next nine point to take the lead for good.
SET 3 I 25-13 USC Aiken hit better than .260 at the net in closing out the night. Block assists by Shannon Skryd and Erin O'Donnell knotted the set up at five points apiece, but the Pacers put together a 5-2 run to go out in front for good, and then tacked up six-straight points later in the set to fuel the final outcome.
