No. 14 Baseball Sweeps Saturday Twinbill With Young Harris

PEMBROKE – The 14th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team battled back from a 6-3 deficit in the top of the sixth inning with four runs of its own in the bottom of the seventh to finish off a series-clinching doubleheader sweep of visiting Young Harris on Saturday evening at Sammy Cox Field. The Black & Gold registered a 6-2 win in the front half of the double dip to open the weekend.
 
The results helped the Braves (8-4, 6-2 PBC) tack up their 13th- and 14th-consecutive home wins dating back to last season, while also giving the Black & Gold its second Peach Belt Conference series win as well. The Mountain Lions (3-6, 3-5) have now dropped four-straight outings.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 2 Bobby Dixon climbed aboard via a one-out single and moved into scoring position as well on an ensuing throwing error. Christian Jayne's fly out to right field moved Dixon to third, and Spencer Faulkner gave the hosts the lead for good on a run-scoring single to right field.
BOT 3 Trevor Clemons roped a 1-and-2 offering into right field to lead off the frame, and Ethan Baucom hammered an 0-and-1 offering deep over the fence in left field to push the lead out to 3-0. The four-bagger moved Baucom into sole possession of third place on the Peach Belt Conference's list of all-time home run leaders.
TOP 6 The Braves sent their entire order to the plate in a 2-hit, 7-run inning that was aided by a pair of errors as well. Trevor Clemons, Gage Hammonds, Spencer Faulkner and Ethan Baucom all recorded a lone RBI in the frame that put the Black & Gold back on top, 11-7.
BOT 6 The Panthers got a 2-run double from Daniel Powell to chop their deficit in half, and then tied the score on a run-scoring double by Da'Avion Sumpter and a sacrifice fly from Nicholas Johnson.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
BOT 4 River Ryan drew a five-pitch walk to start the frame, and Gage Hammonds gave the Braves a short-lived 3-2 lead minutes later on a double to the gap in left field.
TOP 6 Noah Fitzgerald knotted the score back up with one swing of the bat to lead off the frame, and the Mountain Lions took their second lead of the day on Logan Worley's RBI groundout two at-bats later. Branden Kunz struck out Brett Hawkins to tack the second out up on the board, but an ill-timed throwing error in the next at-bat allowed two more runs to cross for the visitors.
BOT 7 Gage Hammonds reached via a throwing error to start the inning, and eventually scored on Spencer Faulkner's two-out single up the middle. Wellington Guzman drew a full-count walk to put two aboard for the Black & Gold, and back-to-back RBI knocks from Garrett Littleton and Trevor Clemons gave the hosts a lead they would not relinquish.
