No. 24 Baseball Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader With Columbus State

PEMBROKE – The 24th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team combined to hit .350 (7-for-20) with runners in scoring position and battled back from early deficits in both games to complete a twinbill sweep of visiting Columbus State on Saturday at Sammy Cox Field. The Braves won Saturday's opener, 5-3, and finished off the day with a 9-7 triumph in game two.
 
It is the 10th doubleheader sweep of the season for the Braves (29-10, 25-7 PBC) who clinched its first series victory against the Cougars for the first time in six seasons as well. Saturday's setbacks marked the second- and third-straight losses for Columbus State (24-14, 18-13) who fell to 9-10 on the road this season as well.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 1 Down 1-0 after surrendering a run in the top half of the frame, the Braves loaded the bases with their first four at-bats in the bottom of the first, and took the lead on Garrett Littleton's 2-run single up the middle.
TOP 7 The Cougars knotted the score back up on a solo homer in the third, but went back out in front again in the seventh. Will Willbanks drew a leadoff walk, and the Cougars chased starter Bucky Bonynge from the mound when Connor Kirley legged out a bunt single two batters later. Robert Brooks would finish off the damage later in the frame when he drew a six-pitch walk with the bases loaded.
BOT 7 Ramsey Petty drew a nine-pitch walk to lead off the home half of the seventh, and Trevor Clemons followed with a perfectly-placed bunt single in the next at-bat to signal a rally. River Ryan's 3-run homer five pitches later put the Black & Gold in front for good.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 1 Colby Brabston drew a one-out walk to get something going for the Cougars who followed with three-straight singles to deal some damage early. The visitors went out in front on Steven Minter's RBI single, and pushed the lead out to three runs thanks to a 2-run single off of the bat of David Meadows three pitches later.
BOT 4 The Braves got a pair of runs with a rally in the third, but added two more scores in the fourth to take the lead. Trevor Clemons laced a two-out single into the gap in left field to give the hosts runners at the corners, and UNCP knotted the score up moments later on a costly wild pitch. A two-out RBI single from Gage Hammonds gave the Black & Gold a 4-3 advantage.
TOP 6 Dane Bullock and Will Wilbanks hit consecutive two-out singles to knot the game up, and Columbus State took its second lead of the contest as a result of the next at-bat which resulted with Wilbanks crossing the plate on a costly fielding error by the hosts.
BOT 6 River Ryan led off the frame with a double to right field, but the momentum quickly shifted when CSU reliever Noah Windhorst struck out each of the next two Braves. However, Garrett Littleton drew a five-pitch walk, and Christian Jayne followed with a standup triple off of the wall in centerfield to clear the bases and give UNCP the lead for good.
BOT 8 River Ryan reached via throwing error to kick off the home half of the eighth, and Bobby Dixon tacked up a pair of insurance runs for the Black & Gold with a 2-run bomb to left field. Garrett Littleton reached moments later on a single to left field, moved into position on a groundout by Christian Jayne, and scored on Spencer Faulkner's seeing-eye RBI single up the middle.

The Braves will snap the lid on their 2021 regular season schedule on Sunday when they close out their weekend series with Columbus State at Sammy Cox Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., and the Black & Gold will honor its 8-member senior class prior to start.
