Columbus State Tops No. 24 Baseball In Series Finale

PEMBROKE – Bobby Dixon's 2-run homer with two gone in the third inning helped give the 24th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team an early 3-0 lead, but visiting Columbus State scored at least one run in each of the next five innings on the way to a 9-4 win over the Braves on Sunday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.

Despite the setback, the Braves (29-11, 25-8 PBC) still tacked up their first series win over the Cougars in five seasons with a pair of victories on Saturday in Pembroke. Sunday's triumph put the kibosh on a three-game losing streak for Columbus State (25-14, 19-13) who evened up its road record (10-10) this season in the process as well.

Top-seeded UNCP, which clinched its first Peach Belt Conference regular season championship two weeks ago, will face the fourth-seeded Cougars again on Saturday and Sunday in a Best-of-3 PBC Tournament semifinal series at Sammy Cox Field. Ticket information, as well as game times, will be announced on Monday morning.

KEY INNINGS
BOT 3 Trevor Clemons picked up his second hit in as many at-bats to lead off the frame, but the Braves saw their next two batters go down in order to quell the momentum. Bobby Dixon delivered the goods moments later, however, when he crushed a 2-and-1 offering from CSU starter Jamie Boatright over the fence in right field
TOP 4 Steven Minter started off the fourth with a solo homer to get the Cougars on the board, and Dane Bullock made it a one-run game when he hit a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield that brought David Meadows scurrying home from third base. Connor Kirley's two-out RBI single two batters later knotted the game up.
TOP 5 Steven Minter singled and logged a pair of stolen bases to move 90 feet away, and Dane Bullock's RBI single put the visitors up for good. A costly wild pitch, as well as a RBI single from Matthew McDade, made it a 6-3 game heading to the sixth.
