No. 22 Baseball Falls In Game 1 Of PBC Semifinal Series

PEMBROKE – The top-seeded and 22nd-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team used home runs from both Wellington Guzman and Trevor Clemons to grab a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third inning, but fourth-seeded Columbus State tacked up five unanswered runs the rest of the way out to post a 7-3 victory over the Braves in Game 1 of a Best-of-3 Peach Belt Conference Tournament semifinal series on Saturday in Pembroke.
 
It was the second-straight home loss for the Braves (29-12) who posted a series win over the Cougars (26-14) last weekend despite a 9-4 setback in the Sunday's finale. The squads will meet again on Sunday at Sammy Cox Field. Game 2 is scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch and an if-necessary Game 3 will begin approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of that outing.

KEY INNINGS
BOT 2 Spencer Faulkner tacked up the first hit of the day for the hosts with a double to the gap in right field, and Wellington Guzman followed with a game-tying 2-run homer two pitches later. Trevor Clemons knocked a 1-and-1 offering from Jalen Latta over the fence in right field later in the frame to put UNCP on top.
TOP 5 Isaac Bouton hit a game-tying solo homer with two outs to knot the score up at three runs apiece.
TOP 6  Steven Minter climbed aboard via a one-out double, and David Meadows gave the Cougars the lead for good in the next at-bat with a RBI single to left field. A ground out from Will Willbanks later in the frame pushed across an insurance run, and gave the visitors a 5-3 advantage.

UNCP will face Columbus State in a PBC Tournament elimination game on Sunday at Sammy Cox Field. First pitch of Game 2 of the Best-of-3 semifinal series is scheduled for 1 p.m. A win by UNCP in Game 2, would force a winner-take-all Game 3 which would begin at approximately 4 p.m.
