Volleyball Cools Off Red Hot Fayetteville State

FAYETTEVILLE – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team combined to hit better than .350 over the last three sets to rebound from an opening-set loss to Fayetteville State, and the Braves pushed their win streak out to three matches with a 3-1 (23-25, 25-14, 26-24, 25-14) win over the Broncos on Friday evening in Felton J. Capel Arena.
 
The triumph gave the Braves (8-5) their first three-match road win streak since the 2014 campaign, while also marking just the second win streak of three or more matches in the last six seasons as well. The setback snapped a three-match win streak for the Broncos (4-2) who fell to 5-35 all-time in the series with the Black & Gold.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 23-25 The Broncos stormed out of the gates early to pick up five of the opening set's first six points, and eventually forged a 17-10 advantage after a service error by the visitors. The Black & Gold whittled away at its deficit and eventually grabbed a 21-20 lead via a ball-handling error by FSU. The Broncos closed out the set by tacking up three of the last four points to grab the evening's early advantage.
SET 2 I 25-14 UNCP rebounded in a big way in the second set, taking advantage of six service errors and a quartet of attack errors to even the night with a rout. Fayetteville State won the first five points to keep the momentum on their side of the court, but the visitors finally answered with a 7-1 run to get back in it. The Broncos used a service error to go out in front, 9-8, but the Black & Gold raked in 10 of the next 11 points to take the lead for good.
SET 3 I 26-24 The Braves hit .444 at the net and committed just one attack error, but needed some late-set dramatics to take control of the match. Fayetteville State strung together four-straight points to go ahead 24-23 and force a visitor timeout, but UNCP came out of the pause in action firing on all cylinders. An attack error by the Broncos knotted the score back up, and the Braves used a kill from Brianna Warren, as well as big block assists from Warren and Katie Pressley moments later, to finish it out.
SET 4 I 25-14 The visitors keyed the match-clinching win in set four with five service aces and a trio of blocks. UNCP streaked early and often, eventually building an 18-4 lead following block assists from Katie Pressley and Brianna Warren, but the Broncos would not go out quietly. Fayetteville State chipped away at the lead and eventually pulled to within nine points, 23-14, but the visitors got a kill from Kaila Crowder to set up match point, and shut down the evening with a service ace.

SERIES NOTE
The Braves have captured seven of the last eight matches in the series with Fayetteville State, and are 14-3 all-time against the Broncos at Felton J. Capel Arena. Thirty-two of UNCP's 35 wins in the series have come in four sets or less, including including 21 straight-set victories.

The Braves will resume their eight-match stretch away from home on Wednesday when they head to Belmont to take on Conference Carolinas foe Belmont Abbey (0-10, 0-0 CC) inside the Wheeler Center. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
