Lucky 7! Volleyball Posts Road Sweep Of Mount Olive

MOUNT OLIVE – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team registered double-digit blocks for the fourth time this season, and fought off a trio of pesky rallies by Mount Olive to register a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 29-27) sweep of the Trojans on Saturday afternoon in Kornegay Arena.

The result gave the Braves (11-5, 4-0 CC) their seventh-straight victory – the longest winning skein for the program since the 1994 squad strung together nine-straight triumphs on the way to tallying a program-best 31 victories. It was also the fifth-straight road win for the Black & Gold – their longest streak of success away from home since the 2014 team strung together six-straight road wins. It was the seventh-straight loss for Mount Olive (5-8, 0-3).

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 25-23 UNCP overcame eight attack errors in the opening set to take control early, but had to fight off a last-gasp rally by the hosts in order to do so. The Braves put together an 8-2 run and eventually forged a 24-18 lead after a kill from Elly Hicks, but the Trojans fought off five-straight set points before succumbing. Morgan Gibbs quelled the scoring drought for the Braves on a kill to the left side.
SET 2 I 25-21 The Braves hit .216 at the net in the second set, but still had to ward off a late surge by UMO in order to take control of the match. The Trojans grabbed a 15-12 lead via a bad set by the Black & Gold, but UNCP responded with a 10-2 run to scurry out in front for good. The hosts pulled to within two points, 22-20, late, but the visitors got the benefit of an ill-timed service error, as well as kills from Erin O'Donnell and Shannon Skryd, to close it out.
SET 3 I 29-27 It took extra time to decide a back-and-forth third set, but UNCP rallied again to cap the team win. Shannon Skryd's kill set the Braves up with a set point in regulation, 24-21, but Mount Olive strung together four-straight points to gain a set point opportunity of its own moments later. The Trojans fought off a set point situation down 27-26, but the Braves wrapped the day in Black & Gold thanks to a kill from Brianna Warren, as well as block assists seconds later by Warren and Katelyn West.
